Archaeologist Anabel Ford studies ancient Maya agriculture with an eye toward how these ancient traditions yield contemporary solutions for the Maya forest of Belize, Guatemala, and Mexico.

The Maya did not have horses or oxen and did not plow their land. Instead, they were forest gardeners, maintaining a biodiverse forest that was productive for them as well as sustainable for local ecosystems.

This presentation will begin with a short video by Jane Goodall followed by a talk on the El Pilar Archaeological Reserve for Maya Flora and Fauna. Afterwards, refreshments will be served.

El Pilar will be a tourist destination to showcase the traditional forest garden culture of the Maya.

We have much to learn today about sustainable practices and maintaining biodiversity, and Anabel Ford brings us the practical solutions of the Maya people.
